A Glut in Fruit
(From tho A u,4; i:ui<l ' 1 Ht.w.'') Owiny to tlie large apple crop this year, and tlic impossibility of yetting riil of tlie savplu.s, -y. -a 1; position Ims arisen. AW uro informed by iLr Harvey Turner, o: llessrs ii. Turner : and Sons, who lias made a tour of th"> i Dominion's fruit districts, that there | are at present 250, i")" eases of apples | in the cool stores of llio Dominion, whereas at this time l ist year the accumulation was 150.001). Apple-grow-ers used to have a large and growing' market in South America, but this has been cut oil', and preference as regards cargoes for England is given to essential articles of food and raw material, i We learn that in spite of the crowding of our cool stores orders have been placed in Canada for 80,()U0 cases of tipples, to come in four shipments, arriving between .September and December. It may be said that the apples now in store will not keep until the c.nd of Ihe year, but uc are informed that they will keep long enough to render unnecessary the importation of the lirst half of these Canadian shipments. Hy December other local fruils will be coming on the market. It is stated that 40,000 cases of the Canadian orders could easily be cancelled. Xot only would these apples compete against those of ouv own growers, who this year have been severely hit by the war, but they would take up a large amount of space that might be tilled with more essential goods. Forty thousand cases make 1740 tons of shipping space. We l hope the Government will do what it | can to protect our growers and economise steamer space.
