Gift Parcels.

Some very saiisfactory proofs have just been < • :eived in Levin that the men in the trenchs do rceivee many of the parcels that are regularly being despatched by the various organisations that are working for this purpose. The Mayoress's Countess of Liverpool Fund in Wellington despatches every month some thousands of parcels containing foodstuffs, smokes and other little sundries to the cost of us per parcel. This work is carried out in conjunction with similar organisations in each of the military centres, so as to ensure sufficient numbers being sent to provide each man with a parcel.

In despatching the Christmas parcels, postcards, addressed to i lit* Secretary of the Wellington Committee, inviting the recipient to acknowledge receipt, of the parcel, were enclosed. The cards ilso intimated that the continuance of the parcel scheme depended on acknowledgments of the safe arrival of the parcels being received by the Committee. Each of the cards also bore the name of the donor or society responsible cor its provision, and in this connection the Levin Patriotic Society supplied the equivalent in •ash of 100 parcels, and consequently cards from the local Society were included in these. By a tiiail just to hand a batch of acknowledgments came to hand, and .11 of these were from men in the vaults, so that the assertion that is sometimes made that the officers get all the good things,- is not borne out in this case. Rfm. D. .H. Itees, 2nd Batt. ■X.Z..11.8./ says : "I have received your parcel in good order and It was highly appreciated." This was typical of. all the replies which also came from Sapper E. O'Neill, D.S.C., N.Z.E.; Pte. C. Lovell, 2nd W.T.R. Taranaki Company; Lnce.-Corp. P. J. Clement., C. Company, 2nd Batt. TLB. (in trenches); Pte. Jack Thorne; 44239 W. Signal.. Those who desire to assist with "his work will have the opportunity on Saturday as the ladies in charge of the local Red Cross Shop propose devoting that day's takings to the Gift Parcel Fund. Mestlanies J l . Wright ana Gr. Tully mil be in charge of the shop and will be glad to receive saleable goods and produce.
