The Levin Chronicle TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 1918.

Mr C. H. Hinman is announced to preach in the Levin Gospel Hall in continuation of liis mission to-niglit and to-morrow night. A cordial invitation is given to all to attend.

The Levin- Presbyterian Chu rch may well be proud of the record established in the recent Harvest Festival effort. The Sunday's thank offering totalled £25 and the total takings at the Fair were over £170, which is expected to net £165.

■ A special meeting of the Borough Council was to have been held last, even ing, but at the Mayor's suggestion, the meeting adjourned so that the members could attend the meeting of 1v . upholders. At the Century Hall this evening a missionary meeting under the auspices of the Levin Methodist Church will he held when the Rev. A. H. Seriven, of Dobu, Papua (New Guinea) will deliver a lecture on life and work among the Papuans. Mr Seriven is a young New Zealander who has "made good" in the mission field and he has a most interesting story to tell. He comes with the •reputation of being a particularly good speaker with a thorough grasp of his subject and those who attend are unlikely to experience any dull moments. Lantern views of the great land and its people will enhance the interI est of the Story.

The Ladies' Committee in charge of the Red Cross Shop propose devoting next Saturday's shop takings to the fund for providing gift parcels for the boys at the front, and they therefore invite everyone to assist with saleable goods and produce to make the day a good one. Of all the calls upon the patriotic public this should appeal most strongly for it means providing direct benefits to the men in the trenches. Some of their letters of appreciation will appear in our next issue. The shop will be in charge of Mesdames F. R. Wright and G. Tully, who are working hard to make a big day of it.

A practice occasioning considerable inconvenience and fraught with no little danger is to be discontinued at the Levin railway station. For some time past the Main Trunk and New Plymouth expresses have crossed here, and the line nearest the station has always been reserved for the fast non-stop mail, while the New Plymouth express, which is largely used by Levin . residents, has pulled up on the outer rails. This meant that passengers had to cross one set of rails fo reach

their train and elderly people and mothers with children found great difficulty in getting to and from their train. Representa-

tions were made to the General Manager of Railways with the result that word has now been received from Mr Hiley that arrangements have been made for the New Plymouth express to keep to the main line at the Levin station instead of taking the loop siding when crossing the Auckland express.
