In reply to a question in the House of Representatives as to the combing out of officers of the Defence Department, the Defence Minister (Sir James Allen) stated that officers in New Zealand in the First Division or Class A of the Second Division who have not been to the front number 46. .Of this number 25 are unfit, one over age, one is on loan from the Imperial Army, 15 are dental officers, 2 are C 2 men who have been re-examined and have gone into camp, one is awaiting despatch to camp, and one is a P.M.O. Officers in the Defence Department had been completely combed out. A proposal to raise funds for the purpose of establishing scholarships to benefit the children of soldiers who have lost their lives at the war has for some time past been discussed by officers at Trentham Camp and certain funds collected. In order to make the movement Dominion-wido and so raise an amount sufficient for the purpose, Dr. J. E. Biddell, of Dannevirke, conceived the idea of holding a monster art union, and successfully canvassed Dannevirke residents for promises to provide the necessary prizes. If the Minister grants his approval to the project the first prize will be £1000 worth of war bonds and other prizes of varying value will be given. It is intended to work every province thoroughly, headquarters being at Dannevirke.
