Rate Collecting.

Mr P. \V. Goldsmith, County irea surer, reported to the meeting 011 the collection of rates in the year ended March 31 last, the total amount received being ±'10,904 8s lOd, of which amount I lie sum of ,£10,170 His 4d represents payments for the year just ,'rnled, and T-3-i 12s Od rates and penalty for previous years. A statement was submitted showing the monthly payments for rates, and the Treasurer pointed out from it that a large number of ratepayers did not hurry to pay their rates until the last two or three months of tlie year. The Treasurer added that it . ivas profitable to the Council in •very way to secure the payment if rates before March 31 each year. Any steps taken to do iway with nrears of rates on that date were in the interests of economy in the working of the Goun■il's busines, and also of fairness 1 o ratepayers all round. It was decided to write off the sum of £G55 6s 7d, rates unpaid to 1914.
