Rate Collecting.
Mr P. \V. Goldsmith, County irea surer, reported to the meeting 011 the collection of rates in the year ended March 31 last, the total amount received being ±'10,904 8s lOd, of which amount I lie sum of ,£10,170 His 4d represents payments for the year just ,'rnled, and T-3-i 12s Od rates and penalty for previous years. A statement was submitted showing the monthly payments for rates, and the Treasurer pointed out from it that a large number of ratepayers did not hurry to pay their rates until the last two or three months of tlie year. The outstanding rates for the separate ridings for the past two years ending on March 31 are: 1918 1917 £ s d £ ' s J Tofeomtn-u 178 0 8 110 4 0 Wirolcino 215 5 6 182 6 1 Otald 128 0 3 209 14 9 Te H'oro 119 14 4 173 4 5 641 0 9 681 9 3 Of this total of £681 9s 3d, •lie sum of £485 has been paid to date and \ judgment has been given in tlie Magistrate's Court for something over £130. The Treasurer added that it . ivas profitable to the Council in •very way to secure the payment if rates before March 31 each year. Any steps taken to do iway with nrears of rates on that date were in the interests of economy in the working of the Goun■il's busines, and also of fairness 1 o ratepayers all round. It was decided to write off the sum of £G55 6s 7d, rates unpaid to 1914.
