Otalu is considering a number of recommendations by Captain Hugo, Inspector of Fire Brigades, for bringing the local tire fighting appliances up to date. One proposal is of interest to Levin which has had so much discussion about the efficiency of its firebell. Captain Hugo evidently considers bells antiquated for he has recommended Otaki to obtain a syren, which is being used in three of the Welington suburbs. The cost is £12 10s complete. The gear is not worked with a rotary action, does not require so high a tower as a bell, and is very effective. The syrens are made in Wellington.
