The Levin Chronicle. THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1918

The meeting of the Hoj nvhenua County Patriotic Association due to be held on. "Wednesday next will be allowed, to lapse owing to the Easter holidays. Arrangements have been made by the management of Everybody's to screen the thrilling war drama "The Spy," a Pox film that has caused a great stir .whenever it has been shown, on April 12. By a fire on Monday, a milking plant belonging to Mr J. Gr. Stevens, of Hautere road, was destroyed. A milking machine, separator, and tester were burnt and Mr Stevens estimates his loss at £150. With f the object of keeping up interest in the Mangahao electrical scheme, MrDustin, of Palmerston, is arranging a bowlers' visit to Shannon on April 3. I The party will be driven to the Mangahao, and ion their return [ will play a match on the Shannon green. It is expected that the following clubs will be represented : Levin, Marton, Feilding, Terrace End, Palmerston, Otaki, and Shannon. Palmerston's effort, to raise a sum of £20,000 in six weeks to put the sack and wounded fund on a good footing was a huge success. The result was announced last night, wlien it was found that £31,508 had been received, and small sums to come in were expected to make this tip to £32,0110. In addition £1000 was raised for the main trunk fire sufferers.

The "Chronicle" will be published as usual on Saturday and will contain the latest cables regarding the fighting in France.

The Treasury informs us that the date of the closing of the Liberty Loan has been extended to April 15.

The public are reminded that Saturday will be observed as a holiday by the business premises in Levin and they should make their arrangements accordingly.

A social and dance will be held in the Druids' Hall on April 4 as a send-off to Mr T. Clark, who is leaving for the front. Any other soldiers .jvho are home on final leave and any who are going into camp about that date are cordially invited to be present.

That our soldiers are not ungrateful for little acts of thoughtfulness was made evident in Levin this week. One small girl in the Levin High School, who forwarded a plum pudding for Christmas among the thousands sent by the school children was the recipient of quite interesting souvenirs from the isoldier who received her pudding. These were a silver ivy leaf with "Ypres" lettered fin gold across it, a silk handkerchief with, a view of the Cloth Hall at Ypres worked on it and a fancy post card.

Mr Marco Fosella, local representative of the N.Z. Fruitgrowers' Federation,' has received copies of the-schedule of the Third National Apple Show, to be held in the Harbour Board's Sheds at Auckland from May .1 to May 4. The classes provide opportunities of competition for the whole range of groovers in New Zealand and should be of especial interest to commercial growers in this district, which is so admirably suited for the culture of the apple. The season generally is reported to have been a bad one for the various pests and blights that diminish the orchardists' returns, but any doubt as to the quality of apples raised in this district will be completely dispelled by a visit to Mr' D. Smart's depot m Queen street where may be seen a remarkably fine exhibit of fruit, notable for its uniformity and colour. It would be a capital advertisement for the capabilities of the district if a representative selection could be made for competition at Auckland.
