The programme for the concert in aid of the Ihakara-Kopu-taroa Patriotic Fund, to be held in Farland's Theatre on Monday is published in another column. An announcement of the position of candidates in the Baby Carnival will be made on Saturday. Big changes are expected in the order as it is known that substantial voting is being reserved in more quarters than one.
Tlie latest news from the Main Trunk line is that heavy rains are falling and the bush fires are being rapidly extinguished. A wide area has been swept by the fires. The town of Raetilu was half destroyed, including nearly all the public buildings except the post' office, while Horopito was entirely swept by the flames. The greatest 'distress prevails, and in some cases settlers are missing. The Hon. Mr Guthrie is representing the Government on the spot and is taking steps for the relief of the sufferers who number hunlost all they possess, homes, stock and belongings have all been swept away.
The Committee . appointed by the Levin and District Patriotic Association to make provision for entertainments has decided to hold a public welcome to the men of this town and district who have returned from active service. The function will be held next Tuesday evening in Everybody's Theatre which has been kindly lent by the management for the occasion. The entertainment will include two speeches of welcome by representatives of the town and country, together with musical items and a picture specially selected 'by Everybody's management. The Committee has decided that no charge will be made for admission in order to give everyone an opportunity of being present to give the returned men the hearty and cordial reception they deserve.
At Monday night's meeting of the Borough Council, a letter was received from Mr A. J. Harding by directioii of the headmaster of the Levin District High School thanking the Council, on behalf of the staff and scholars for placing the Borough baths at their disposal. As a result of the privilege grianted no less than 59 children qualified for certificates from the N.Z. Amateur Swimming Association. Three girls and four boys qualified for certificates for swimming one mile; four boys and six girls swam half a mile; five boys and five girls swam a quarter of a mile; and the remainder qualified in distances varving from 100 yards up to 440 yarcls. Of those who qualified no less than 19 are this season's learners, and of these learners four (one boy and three girls) swam a distance of half a mile in their first season. 'Pleasure was expressed at the presence of : the Town Clerk as representing the Borough Council at the tests, ana, Councillors were invited to attend future trials. 4 'The Council may rest satisfied," concluded the letter, "that - its action has done a great deal to promote the (true object of awimming-4ong distance work.'' The Mayor said it was very satisfactory to get a letter like tHat, and -to know tiiat the facilities the Council was providing were:of so much value.
