' Large bush fires are raging in the northern country districts and the city has been enveloped in a thick cloud of smoke so dense that the atmosphere is distinctly tainted and. the light obscured to such an extent that most of the offices are compelled to use artifi- . cial light. The Secretary to the General Post Office received the following message from the Postmaster at Wanganui: "Taihape reports that bush fires are raging around Oliakune and Raetihi, also between Utiku and Mangaweka." A further message received from Taihape states: "Rangataua to Raetihi is a. mass of fires. The w v ires are all down around and close to Ohakune-. We had Ohakune at 8.30 a.m. and the Postmaster was saying the wires were all down aim all were in ' contact both north and south of him. We have been unable to raise him since and lost him before the information was completed. He stated he was trying to get temporary men to start and reinstate the line. It is reported fhat the Raetihi office has been burned down."
