He went out to the Lake and played over the ground, aying out a nine-hole course that should give players a sporting *ame. Mr Ilollis was very enthusiastic over the prospects of the inks and said tlie course would be i very suitable one for ladies. !t is so easy of access from the own that it should become very >opular. It is the intention of he Board to make immediate use if tlie advice of the expert and to iroceed with the work of prepaing the greens at once so that the inks should be available for play uring the coming season.

A meeting of the Horowhenua Brand) of the Is .Z. Educational Institute was held on Saturday at the Levin District High School. There was a good attendance of teachers and Mr A. J. Harding' presided. Business of a routine nature was mainly dealt with. Tile decision of the Conference held in Wellington in January last to appoint a paid secretary to the Institute met with unanimous approval and at the same time it was felt the office should be held_ by a young man, and a resolution, to be forwarded to all the branches in New Zealand, was unanimously passed that the holder of the office should be a man not above the age of 45 years

The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua Lake Domain Board was held last evening, there being present the Mayor (in the chair), and Messrs Aitken, France, Dempsey, Broughton, Hanita Henare, and Gardener (secretary). The only business was a report by the Mayor on the progress of the work at the Lake. He said he had visited the Lake and found the water at its normal summer level. Spoil was being carted from the trench at the drainage works to the beach for filling in behind the proposed wall, and the work of dredging 1 the channel up to the wall was also in progress. The men seemed to be making a good job of it. Discussion took place on the finances of the Board and it was found that the building of the wall, the channelling and the foundations of the boathouse would make great inroads into the money available for the erection of the necessary buildings. It was suggested that perhaps the work of pulling down the old boat house and re-erecting and repairing it might be done by working parties of residents interested in the improvement of the Lake. This suggestion was referred to Mr l'Yaiice for consideration before next meeting.

The Chairman (Cr Monk) reported to Saturday's meeting of the Horowlienua. County Council oil the result of an interview with the Public Works Minister (Sir W. Eraser) regarding the proposal to transfer a Government grant of £400 to the main county road' at Wailcanae, adding it to £250

already allocated by the Government. , The Minister agreed providing the County did two miles of road which would cost nearly £1100, thus giving a further expenditure of £500. This, the Chairman contended, should not all be borne by the Riding, but part of it by the whole County. The road was of little use to the riding, being mainly for through traffic. The Government was finding £GSO, the riding was prepared to find £250, leaving the balance for the County. It would be a pity to lose the Government | grant. He knew he was creating a precedent, but he was prepared to help any other part of the county at a future time when a road for general use required attention. Cr Broadlielt pointed out that the Wirokino riding had spent a lot of money on the main county road without assistance. Cr Law pointed to the main road between Levin and Shannon which was in the Wirokino riding. Cr Murray was sympathetic to the chairman's request provided some definite principle was laid down on the matter of main roads. The chairman said he had always held that the main roads should not be a charge on

the ridings but on the county. Cr Murray said this principle was in vogue in the Eketahuua County. It was decided 011 the motion of Cr ltyder, seconded by Cr Bryant, that the balance of the money required for the two miles of road to be done be paid by the County after the ruling has contributed £250.
