—»■ ■ - Squabble Waimate, Marcli 9. A young Maori named Mason Boko, was brought into Waimate Hospital to-day with a bullet in his head. He stated to the police that ho had been drinking with Charles Boyes at the latter's house near Morven, seven miles from here. The police have been out all afternoon in quest of Boyes, who is alleged to have fired the shot. Dr Pitts has operated on the Maori. He traced from the cheek a wound at the edge of the mouth, through to the back of the neck, but has not yet extracted the bullet. The patient's condition is serious. The Maori's version is that he and Boyes were drinking and playing cards. At 11 o'clock he said he was going I home. Boyes turned nasty and let off a | revolver at him. Boyes' own story is that he was | showing the Maori what he would do ■ to the police the next time he met I them, and the revolver was accidentally discharged, f Later. Boyes has been arrested.
