FOR THE BOYS IN THE TRENCHES.
LEVIN JOINS Tllii ItED Tlil-
ANGLE APPEAL. The great appeal being made with remarkable success throughout New Zealand by the I.AL.C.A. for funds to provide comlorts for the boys in the trenches tins year is going to receive enthusiastic support from Levin and district. llecently the local Patriotic- Society decided to devote the proceeds of a big lied Cross shop day run by Dalgety and Co.'s Levin staff. Messrs Porter and Lawson went to work enthusiastically and the movement soon grew to something larger than a single day's operations. Mr E. C. Brownell (National Secretary) accompanied by Sergeant Chappell, D.C.M., and Private Coltham, were in Levin last Wednesday, and met with splendid success in a brief canvass. They returned yesterday and addressed a hastily convened meeting of local enthusiasts. It soon became evident, after hearing the thrilling story of Sergt. Chappell, that the needs of the boys in the trendies were of paramount importance, and that in face of the growing proportions of the local cjl'ort, the proposed carnival for the County fuiid would suiter if held oil the date originally fixed; The leaders of this latter movement Mere all present and aner discussion 'magnanimously decided to , postpone their effort and -exert all their energies to assist Dalgety and Co. with the Y.M.C.A.
Ihose present formed themselves into an executive committee with Jir Porter as convener, Mr Keedwei] secretary, and Mr Goldsmith treasurer, and the campaign will be vigorously pushed to the final day, March 23rd.
Already one leading resident has offered £100 provided four others will give like amounts. Already three of the £100 cheques have been promised, and there are a number of handsome donations between £10 and £100. The Committee are aiming high and are trenches will not suffer through any unwillingness on Levin's part.
