Four babies have been entered for the Ihakara-Ivoputaroa Patriotic Society's Baby Queen Carnival, which has now commenced and will close on March 27. The competitors are: No. 1, Ihakara Patriotic baby; No. 2, Koputaroa Soldiers' baby; No. 3, Levm baby; No. -1, Native, baby. _ lhe position of the four candidates will be announced from time to time in the "Chronicle" but the number of votes each has received will not be disclosed until the competition closes and the successful baby is crowned Queen of the Carnival.

011 'Thursday afternoon about 25 boys from the Lovin School swam for the certificates granted by the X.Z. Amateur Swimming Association. Two obtained learners' certificates—loo yards first I year of learning. Two swam a I mile — the highest certificate granted—and the remainder did distances varying from 220 yards to BHO yards. Next Thursday the girls will be tried. There are over 40 making the attempt and it it is hoped a good tinuster of pairents will be in attendance. The hours are from 3 to 4.30.

Next Wednesday the Swimming Carnival which litis been promoted with the object of help- ] ing towards the improvement oi the Town Baths, will from present appearances be a huge success. The entrance fees are very reasonable and the prizes liberal. Besides straight out swimming events for sfchool children, boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 17, and adults, several entertaining items 'are on the program. These include barrel races, nightgown and candle races, umbrella race, etc. Afternoon tea will be dispensed at a tearoom now in course of making.

A very interesting game resulted from Eoxton's attempt to regain the Eaiineburgh feathers on Wednesday. ' The team whic came over was Large, Christie, Whibley and lliinmer (slap), and the defenders were Ingram, ltoe, Porteous and Pyke (skip). At tne end of the 20th head the scores were Levin 22, Eoxton li, and the game looked as good as won, but with his last shot on the 21st head Xiimmer took "kitty into the clitch and Eoxton lay five, making a tie. In the play on Levin managed to get one in, so winning a decidedly good game.

At the Levin Court on Thursday, before Mr Xj. G. Ileid, S.M., on the information of G. Watson, County ranger, Patrick Gill was charged with alloying 20 cows to wander on the main road at Shannon, and was fined £1 and costs 7s. Sergt.-Major Liddy gave evidence in support of the. charges.
