FATHER AND SON IN COURT,
A fight between father and son had its sequel in the Auckland Police Court when John McLellan and Edward James McLellan werp charged with assaulting each other. John McLellan, the father, pleaded guilty, but the son entered a plea of not guilty. Sub-Inspector Broberg said tlie two, accused had indulged in a particularly disgraceful fight at the home of the elder accused in Selbourne Road, Grey Lynn. The fight took place in full view of the public, and drew a crowd of spectators. Evidence was given by Alexander Shanks, who said the fight lasted 10 minutes after his arrival on the scene, and developed into a "regular Donnybrook of a fight." The father appeared to be getting the hotter of the encounter. Another witness, Thomas Bar-
row, said he endeavoured to separate the assailants, but thought the affair nothing more than a scuffle. In defencc, the father stated that the trouble started over an agrument concerning the war, and, as each was able to look after himself, he did not think police interference was necessary. The son contended that no anger was shown and there was no hitting. The Sub-Inspector characterised the younger man as a "cheeky hoodlum," with previous convictions against him, but thought the father, in view of his plea of guilty, was deserving of some consideration. The younger man was fined £2, and the fathor 10s, each being ordered to pay 10s costs.
