PEA-RIFLE.
(To the Editor.) Sir.—lf not encroaching oil the valuable space of your paper, 1 would like to warn those who are unaquainted with the surroundings of the Hokio Beach, which at this time of the year is visited by numerous seabatEers, of the dangerous practice of discharging pea rifles in the direction of the water's edge. I know of a case in point which happened only on Saturday last. Two young laaiies, who after dress, ing, were just about to rise, when to their surprise a bullet from a pea rifle whizzed through the air just above their heads. Had they risen one second sooner the result may have been both fatal for one of them and sorrowful for all con. cerned. People who are only in the habit of visiting the beach once in a while must -not imagine that, when they do, it is there for for their own special benefit and pleasure, and that they are the only living ones there, as at certain times of the day the surrounding sand dunes are dotted with bathers, either dressing, or undressing-, it being the only place Mailable for the purposeI would suggest that the Horowhenua County Council should have a notice board erected in a conspicuous place, say at that part of the road known as the "motor car stand," warning those in possession of firearms of any kind that they must not discharge them within a radius of, say, one mile of Hokio Settlement, otherwise they will be asked to pay the penalty. Trusting that this will be a warning to persons. carrying firearms in the vicinity -pi: Hokio Beach.—l am etc., "PARENT."
