An astonishing total of what waste of bread moans is given by the "Church Army Gazette" in the following supposed autobiography of a wasted slice of bread: —"I am a slicc of bread. I measure three inches by two. My thickness is half an inch. My weight is exactly one ounce. X am wasted once a day by forty-eight million people in Britain. I am the bit left over, the slice eaten when really I was not wanted, I am the waste crust. Collect me and my companions for a week, and we shall amount to 9380 tons of bread. Two shiploads of good bread wasted! Almost as much as twenty submarines if they had luck—could sink! If you throw me away, or waste me, you are as good as adding twenty submarines to the German Navy!" At the Waipawa Magistrate's Court on Thursday, before Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., two cases brought under the War Regulations were heard. Francis William Lukaschcffsky was eharged with publishing a statement indicting disloyalty, to wit: "Three cheers for the Germans. They arc going to win, and then the bally Britishers can look out.'' Defendant was fined £50, in default three months' imprisonment. Godfried Albert Tetrowski was charged with publishing a statement, indicating disloyalty, to wit: "Alick, you would be n b —— fool to go back into camp. I don't like anyone to go and light against Germany." After hearing evidence defendant was convicted and j fined £25, in default two months' imprisonment.
