Seven arrests were made in Auckland on Saturday of men charged with street betting. Those on whom the arrest warrants were executed are: Frederick James Kernott, Joseph Rees, Henry Newton, John Weston, William Lane, John Martin, and Edward George Lowe.
There was evidently a marked difference in the welcome tendered to the wounded men arriving in Auckland by the last hospital ship to that which characterised the recent receptions of letunied men, . The Auckland paper states thai- a great deal of enthusiasm marked this welcome:
Mr A. Donald Paterson, of Christchurch, who wont home a year ago to place his new carbuTation system on the market, has had a remarkable success, and a cable message just received says: "New patents granted, but as they are considered of national importance they will not be published until after the war. I have now full authority to manufacture, and, in addition to the Admiralty work, I have orders to fit Government agrimotors." Motorists trill recollect Mr Paterson's Maxwell, which, with his new system, would run on kerosene just as well as on petrol. Most heavy oils can bo vapourised, and the invention should revolutionise the internal combustion engine.
