GERMAN ESCAPEES CAPTURED

Advice was received officially cahis evening tliat the eleven German prisonera who escaped from Hotui'hi; on December 13th haid been recaptured at the Kermadecs, aboard the scow Moa. The crew of the latter are safe. The Pacific Cable steamer Iris left Auckland, at noon last Sunday, carrying two six-pounder guns and gun crews. I)'; proceeded to mak© a search of the islands in 'the -vicinity oS Mercury Day, off which tho capture of the Moa by the Germans was observed. Armed parties were landed for search purposes by instruction from the Auckland militiary authorities. The Irlis then steamed direct to i'ihe Kermadecs, it being considered 1 likely that the ;Germans would endeavour to obtain foodi. from the provision depot on the island. The Ij-ie reached the group at noon on Wednesday and there met the Moa, on her arrival. It is understood the capture was effected without b.lood_ shed. The Ill's is now returning to Auckland with the prisoners aboard. The original crew are .sailing the Moa back.
