LEVIN STATE SCHOOL.
THE ANNUAL PICNIC
The rain which fell yesterday morning in no- way damped the ardour of the Levin school cliild-
ren, Avhose long-delayed picnic was timed for that day. v The little people commenced to muster at the racecourse soon after 9 o'clock and long before dinner time there Avab a very large attendance of scholars and parents, and under the direction of their teachers and the committee, the programme was speedily swing. Drizzling iain fell throughout the afternoon but it had no effect on the spirits of the picnickers. The
grandstand offered shelter, from \ the Avorst of the shoAvers and when the children gathered there for refreshments, dispensed with a bountiful hand twice during the day, the cheerfulness and gaiety of the scene was sufficient, to drive the gloom and depression from the mind of the most hopeless pessimist- One of the happy surprises of the day was a visit from the veritable old Father Christmas, Avho came by. motor car, bringing Avith him a load of SAveets that Avere speedily accounted for by the 500 to 000 children. The sports Avent on steadily - throughout the day and it took all the efforts of Mr Thomson (chairman of the committee) as starter, Mr Harding (the liandicapper), Mr ;Mclntyre (the- headmaster), ; Messrs Bertram, Rockel, Sims, Vickers and O'Donohue (Judges), Messrs Jones and Connor and Misses Cathie' and Hitchcock, of tile teaching staff to conclude the events by the appointed time. Exceptionally large fi elds contested every race and some of them provided plenty of amusement. The catering arrangements Avere under the supervision of Messrs Broome and Smith assisted by the wives" of the teachers-■ and committeemen and the children's verdict was that they did their work/ in an entirely satisfactory fashion. A day that Avill be memorable for the little folk came to a perfect end with tea at fiA r e o'clock and thereafter home, tired but happy, by motor and coach.
