LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Levin Borough Council met last evening. Present—The .Mayor (in the chair) and Crs Mciienzie, -Bull, Broome, Lancaster, Matheson,, Parker, Aitken, Dr. Bryson and Eyder. Tile Town Clerk, Mr Gardener, and Mr Cliannings, Borough- overseer, were also present. COB KESI'LLX DENCE. The Public Trustee acknowledged receipt of interest on £10,00(1 Joan amounting to i'4l4 2s lid, also .£IOO for redemption of one debenture. The Westport Coal Co., advised that, in consequence of tile increase of railway freights at Westport the price of coal would be advanced -'id per ton. CHAKGES TOR "WATER POWER. The "Waterworks Committee reported having considered an application by the Levin "Chronicle" proprietary for a reduction in the charge for water for power on the ground (1) that the charge was based on the supposed use of 5 h.p. engine for driving the linotype, whereas 1A h.p. would be sufficient, and (2) that the charge was 'assessed on the requirements of a daily newspaper. The committee : That the price of water for power purposes to the Levin Chronicle be kept at the present charge till the end of the financial year at which period the committee will review the charges made to all consumers of water in connection with power. Cr McKpnzie asked if the application could not be dealt with at once as it had been shown apparently that a great deal less water was being used than was being charged for. . " Other Councillors considered the adjustments should not be disturbed till March and the committee's recommendation was adoptWATERWORKS COMMITTEE. The Waterworks- Committee made the following recommendations :— That Mr P. E- Palmes be allowed to lay a 1 inch pipe at his own expense from the Queen St.main to his new residence situated on the Arapaepae Road, and in future maintain the pipe line to the satisfaction of the Council; that- the annual charge for water for domestic purposes only be £(i per annum till further notice: the Council to reserve the right to take one connection if needed oft 1 inch main under the following conditions.—The person for whom the one connection may be required to pav to the Council on behalf of Mr Palmes an equitable proportion of the capital cost expended on pipes and laying tlie main; that the use of the water be granted to Mr Pajmes during the pleasure of the Council. Sanitation.—The Committee recommends that in future a sj-ste-, matic and periodical inspection o± public and private conveniences Clerk said Mr Palmes was putting in the watei a a cost of =£230 to himself. The Mayor said the Committee considered'that if at any subsequent time" another property oaaner desired to have the water it was onlv fair that lie should paj Mr Palmes a proportion of his outlav. The claims of the town must come first and that was why the arrangement, was made during the pleasure of the Council. On the Mayor's motion seconded by Cr. Bull it was decided that the Borough surfacemen be granted holidays from noon on baturdav, December 22 till the morning of 'Wednesday, January 2, 1JI&, - that the stoker of the gaswoiks be granted holidays equivalent to the" surfacemen when convenient to the gas manager; that the Boion Saturday, December 22, Ul<, till Saturday, January 5, 1 Ji°. 111 Cr &I Mclvenzie thought the surfacemen should get the some holiwork to ilo though the office mis it i, (> ( .]nsed, and lie could not go awav from town on that account.
