The Salvation Army Young People's Anniversary Services will be held on Sundaj - next. Envoy Prince of Palmerstou will conduct special meetings throughout the day, his addresses being appropriate to the occasion. The children will take part both in the afternoon and evening services. On M.onday night a demonstration consisting of drills, inarches, action songs, solos, dialogues etc., will be rendered by the children. The distribution of rewards is also to lake place during (he evening.

Some amusement was caused in Hie Magistrate's Court on Thursday by a case in which E. Wilson, poundkeeper, claimed from John Robbie the sum of £1 12s Od poundkeeper's costs for a horse that had been impounded by the County ranger. Defendant's evidence disclosed a transaction in barter. He said be bought the horse from W. Page for three bags of potatoes,, and he declared the horse was no good to him, so he sent it back to Page's paddock by a boy, and he was not responsible for it being on the road. The Magistrate held that defendant was the man in possession of the horse and there was no proof that he rightfully returned it. Jung-, ment was therefore given for plaintiff with costs.

Tlie Minister for Defence states that eleven prisoners oi' war escaped from Motuihi Island (Auckland harbour) and not ten as originally intimated. The officer'commanding' at Motuihi will be suspended at once and a full enquiry held. The escapees include the captain of the German raider See Adler which was recently sunk in (he South Pacific.

In the Hamilton Supreme Court Sarah Moles sued the Crown for £2000 for the death of her son James Casey; an electric linesman at llotorua. The Crown admitted its liability and the jury gave the mother £50 deceased's wife living separately £425 and the illegitmate child of another woman £500.
