FATAL ACCIDENT.

TRAGIC DEATH OF MR J'. McCAKTY. An accident, with fatal results, occurred at about 12.-30 yester- J day, when John William McCar- | ty, who was riding a motor cycle I with side-car attached, collided with the Wellington-Napier ex- [ press train. The rider was go- j ing down the Kairanga road into | l'almerston, and at the point where the road crosses the line, lie was struck by the train. Mr McCarty was right between the rails when struck, and he was carried along oil the cow catcher for about 25 yards before the train was brought to a standstill. He | was shockingly injured, and died at G p.in- last evening- without regaining consciousness. It appears that deceased had gone out to Toxward's farm, about two miles distant, to attend to a horse's teeth, and left the farm at about 12.20 on his way back to Palmerston, remarking that he would be late home for dinner.

The late Mr McCarty, who was -11 years of age, was a son of Mr and Mrs George McCarty, two of Palmerstons earliest settlers, and has carried on a blacksmith's business in Cuba Street for some years. l?or soifie time past he has been practising as a horse denfist> and was out on duty in eonnection'with this branch of the business when he met with his fatal accident. He was an enthusiastic member of the Manawatu Trotting- Club, and a wellknown owner and rider of trotting horses. He was also a member of the Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning and Orient Lodges and several other local institutions. He was a married man, and besides Mrs McCarty and two young sons, leaves a father ad mother, two brothers and one sister (Mrs tieid, of Wellington), to mourn their loss. The late Mr McCarty spent a number of years on the goldfields at Ivl on dyke and in British Columbia, and had some very exciting adventures during his sojourn in that country.
