GATHERING AT KOPUTAROA.
A large gathering of residents met ii>. tiic Koputaroa school last evening Lo say "Goodbye" to Mr and Mrs 'Donglas Gardner and family, who are amongst- the onrlieKt settlers in thatdistrict and art* now about to leave for the Pohanji na. Mr S. A. .11 roadbelt presided and an excellent and diversified concert porgraininc provided entertainment for the audience. Items were contributed by the following: —
Pianoforte solo, Mi<-s 'Best-; song, Mrs AY. White, accompanied by Mrs Enston : duet. Misses Ivilsby and; .Best, accompanied by Mrs Kilsb.v, (encored.); recitation, Mr Ken Ai'tken, (encored); pianoforte solo. Mis>; bite ; song, Mr Gardner, accompanied, by Mrs Ivilsby, (encored); recitation. Mr Str.atton ; song, Airs Kilsby, accompanied by Mist- Best: Recitation, Mr Ken Aitken, (enco'rcd); son,n, Mivs Best, accompanied by Mrs Kilsby; recitation, Mr Ken Aitken, (encored); song Mr Hall, accompanied by Mrs Kilsby. At an interval in the concert, Mr Broadbelt referred to the approaching departure of Mr and Mrs Gardner and their long desidence in Koputaroa dat_
nig back to tlio days when there were no roads. During that time- they had earned the respect and esteem of their neighbours and the goodwill of a host of friends. Mr Gardner had taken his spare of public work and a full interest in the genera,l welfare. On behalf of their friends Mr Broadbe.lt ■asked their acceptance of a silver tea and coffee service, and wished them a prosperous future in their new home. Mr Gardner responded, thanking the settlers for their parting gift and for the good wishes and kindjy words which accompanied it. He said they would always look back wl.th pleasant recollections upon their 2o years' residence in the district, and remember the good friends they bad made there. Mr Gardner mentioned that be bad received a letter from the Maori settlers of the neighbourhood, expressing their sorrow at his leaving them and assuring hir.i of their friendship and esteem. He appreciated the spirit which had prompted their kind action. He then introduced his successor. Mr Hall, to the gathering. Supper was served bv the ladies and the social ter_ mh-.at.'d with an enjoyable dance Programme. I
