TOWN BEAUTIFICATION.

« WHAT MIGHT BE DONE. Tho Borough Council spent some time last night descusstaig the possibilities of increasing the attractiveness of Levin. After some reference to tile reserves abutting on the railway line Dr Bryson made the sugigestion that the sides of the railway line through the business area of the town should be planted! with a hedge of rambler roses. 'He would undertake to provide the cuttings at the proper season. In two or three years a continuous hedge would shut out the badk yards from the view of train passengers and would give them a lasting impression of Levin. The Mayor said that beyond Queen st. private lands abutted on the railway line and that might be a difficulty. Cr. Lancaster did not believe there would be any objections. At present rubbish was being thrown over the fences on to the line. Cr. Ai;':.ken considered the Council should take pome steps to prevent old tins and rubbislh being deposited there. Cr Malilieson suggested planting such trees as weeping willows, which grow quickly and would completely shut out the tmdesired view. Cr. Parker pointed out that the present wajs not the time to plant, but: they could, in the meantime, eommuni. cate with the Bail way Department. Cr Matheson said he was prepared to move that the Town Clerk write to the ried, ilhat tho Town Clerk write to the property owners from the Post office to Bath street and ask their co-oper-ation in a scheme of beautifying the railway line at the back of their premises. Cr. McKenzie said lie l understood tho Railway Department was favourably disposed towards the planting maintenance of >a further plot of ground near the station and he suggested that representations be made to tJlie proper aui'Jiorities to hare tho work put in hand. Cr Lancaster remarked that this was a good opportunity to iimprove this part of the town and it should' not be losi: sight of. It was decided to communicate with the Railway Authorities.
