The Chronicle LEVIN. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER- 8, 1917 THE COUNTY ELECTIONS.
■The Jioiniu;J:ion.s lor the Horowhenua County Council elections indicate generality that the ratepayers are taking a Lively in County affairs and that the honour of assisting in local government is not lightly regarded. flliere will 'be electionis in three out of foul' ridings. There is evidently 110 one in the To Horo r'.ding desirous of entering til© lists with two such doughty opponent* as the County chairman (Cr Monk) and Or. Catley, .and tliqy are r<S;urned unopposed. In Tokomaru and Wirokino there are each lour candidates. Tokomaru ratepayers have the choice of men all new to 10 collIIci! but in Wirokino two of t,h.e old councillors, (Messrs Broadbelt and Murray) wiih a good record of work done in the past, are stand-. i«g again*, and the other candidates ar e -I" «Jas. MoLeavey, who lias sorved the ratepayers faithfully in former veai*. and Mr A. S. Death, a new aspirant o cl. Three councillors are required Otnki can ohoo.se between the sitting member, Or. Ityder, Mr AY. ,J. of Manakau winch has not I ' l l fco a represent at jive on the County Councl.l, ;and Mr Stewart Mckenzie, of To Horo, who come, of a family which ilras taken a prominent part in public affairs and flocal o-overn ment in other parts of ,y,e Dominion. MoKenzie .was nominated for both the Te Horo and Otaki ridings, but ho electetd to contest the Litter seat. One notable feature of the nominations is the absence of several well-known names from Me Itete. Some of thor-e who hare borne Itfie heat and the burden of the day in the service of tho ratepayers have decided to retire from r.h'is department of public activity. Mr •John KeibbeW, of Qhiau, the olden; of the Councillors, is one of these. Tliirty two years ago he wa* the prime mover in establishing the Horowhenua County and his name has been inseparable from its operations ever since. After n generation of devoted la.bour in local adiminis|:ration fhle is surely
entitled to retire with a seiv-e of civic ciut.y done wind carrying with him ilio grateful recognition of the public lie lias served so long. Cr. Freeman, with a record of over \Vivcnty years spent in conserving the interests of the ratepayers is another if rain tfhic nomination paper; Or. Venn, who ha,-' been for over a quarter of a century prominent in County affaire, and Or. Stephenson are others who have mrde great sacrifices of their time -and bren unsparing of their fcalcnts in the field of local administration. Their retirement open.*, up tlh'o way for the election of several new Councillors bringing fresh ideas and points of view to the Council table, .and lit is an encouraging sign thaii the younger generation of ratepayers are offering their services freely to fill the vacancies.
