The Chronicle LEVIN. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1917. IMPROVING THE SHOW.
. The Mayor took advantage of a largely attended social gathering of local ladies yesterday to put before thein the suggested improvements to the Horowhenua A. and P. Association's show schedule. He pointed out that the Association was working for the benefit of the whole district and community, but it was considered that for some time it had been hanging fire, more particularly since the war commenced. Still those connect, ed with the show regarded it as their duty to carry ou through the war [ period in the hope that better and ! brighter times were ahead. Last year's operations had resulted in a slight loss—about £5 in all. This year it was felt that they should en. deavour to keep the show alive and make it the means of adding some, thing to the patriotic funds. One suggestion was that the ladies should undertake the luncheon arrangements with the assistance of the men, and it was believed that an acceptable sum might thus be raised for the patriotic funds. Then there were complaints that the show was not sufficiently attractive and it was thought that a heme industries section would add
variety and provide an element of interest for many people who were not now specially catered for. A large marquee would be used for the display of these industrial classes. The Mayjr made it plain that it was not intended to trespass on the preserves of the Horticultural Society, which had discontinued its shows for the present. It was rather hoped to ke«p the interest in these r, lasses alive, .and he was sure that if the Horticultural Society required it when the time came for it to resume operations, the A. and P. Association would be quite willing to desist Theproposil, however, could not be carried out by mere meu alone. They must have the assistance of the ladies, who would need to frame the schedule and advise the committee as to the details. The ladies of Levin had' never failed yet, and if, after discussiug the matter, they decided to assist the Association, he was sure that, with their capacity for organisation and work, the new section could be made a valuable asset to the show.
