DEATH OF A FAMOUS PUGILIST.

Chicago, Oct. 22. Obituary. —Bob Fitzsimmons. ["Bob"Fitzsimmons was born at Helston, Cornwall, on 4th June, 1862, but came to New Zealand in his early life, and resided for many years at Timaru, where he followed the vocation of a blacksmith. When he took to pugilism he soon became prominent. He went to America, and in 1891 defeated Jack Depmsey for the middleweight championship of the world in thirteen rounds at New Orleans. In 1896 he beat Peter Mailer in one round (in lniin. 35 sec.), and in ISOG joined the heavyweights, and won the undisputed championship title from J. J. CorIjett, at Carron, Nevada, in fourteen rounds. Corbett had won the title from John L. Sullivan. In 1599 Fitzsimmons lost the title to J. J. Jeffries, who defeated him in eleven rounds at Coney Island. Fitzsimmons challenged Jeffries in 1902, and this time was defeated in two rounds. Fitzsimmons visited Australia and New Zealand in 1909, appearing on the vaudeville stage. He was induced to enter the ring again to meet Bill Lang, ■ the Australian, but was beaten in twelve rounds. Returning to America, Fitzsimmons resumed his appearances on the vaudeville stage.]
