THE UNDERSIGNED, * * carrying. on business in the Borough of Levin, agree that we will not in future close our business premises or observe a holiday on the People's Day at the Palmerston North Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Summer Show. We wish to place on record the reasons which have induced us to arrive at this decision. Our reasons are as follows, viz: (1) The People's Day at the Palmerston North Show falls within a fortnight of Labour Day, which is a statutory holiday, and, in consequence, the holiday heretofore observed on Show Day interferes seriously with our local trading and business arrangements. (2) That owing to the alterations in trade conditions caused by the War, it is now more prejudicial and detrimental to our interests than formerly to observe holidays at short intervals. (3) That the number of holidays observed by Retailers in Levin has largely increased of late years, longer holidays have been observed at Christmas and Easter than form erly, and we have therefore come to the conclusion that a holiday on Show Day is no longer necessary, and that we cannot, in justice, be expected to close our premises on that day. (4} That we are willing to make arrangements whereby our employees will have an opportunity of visiting the Palmerston North Summer Show, subject always to the exigencies and requirements of business W.
