The ranger reported at Saturday's County Council meeting that the roads were fairly clear, but he had 13 persons to appear on next Court day. He hoped the dog registration would be finished this month. Reporting on noxious weeds, the ranger said blackberries were prevalent in some parts, and he had drawn the Inspector's attention to the fact. He complained of pig-stye nuisances on the County road at Ihakara. This is to receive strict attention.
The road roller purchased by the Horowhenua County Council from Eltham, arrived in Levin by rail on Tuesday and was given a trial on the borough streets yesterday afternoon, when it worked most satisfactorily. The roller is in splendid order, and the Council appears to have made a good bargain. The portion of Oxford street, in front ol the Library, at present being prepared for tarring, was subjected to a thorough rolling, and the machine very effectively demonstrated its utility. Mr H. Domb, of Everybody's Pictures, had a close call last evening. As he was starting the 16 h.p. gas engine that supplies the power at the theatre, it backfired. Mr Bomb's arm was caught between the belt and the flywheel, and he was carried round by the wheel and dashed to the ground. He was picked up in a semi-conscious condition, and was found to be suffering from a severe scalp wound, a badly wrenched arm, and various pruises and abrasions. After receiving medical attention, however, he pluckily went into the operator's cabinet and put the pictures through.

A fire broke out yesterday morning in a shed at the rear of the Railway Hotel at Otaki, when a quantity of wood and coal was destroyed. Had it not been for a willing bucket brigade, headed by Mr W. Baker, his two daughters, and Messrs Larkin, Little, Harnett, and Knatt, considerable damage would have resulted, and in all probability the station master's residence, only a short distance away, would have been destroyed. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The building destroyed was covered by insursnce, but Mr Harnett lost a good amount of firewood, coal, etc. —Mail.
