*. Another requisition was made by the Imperial Board of Agriculture early in July for additional volunteers for the Women's Land Army. Several thousand women have found work on the land in response to the original National Service appeal made in the early spring, but there was still an urgent demand from all parts of the country for more women workers. The new demand did not arise from the immediate necessities of the summer season, as most of the women were required for milking and slock-keep-ing. The women's section- of the National Service Department is careful not to disturb existing occupations, and not to recruit women already engaged 011 work of national importance. Girls who are recruited under the National Service the Avar for whole-time service. They receivc free maintenance during training; free outfit, consisting of breeches, overalls, hat, and high boots; travelling expenses in connection with their work; a minimum wage of ISs a week, or the district rate, whichever is higher; free maintenance during terms of unemployment up to four weeks at a time; housing, personally inspected and approved by the Women's War Agricultural Committee in each county; and work on carefully selected farms, with promotion and higher pay as a reward for good service.
