Mr Harley secured a splendid start, Hastie and Arihia were first going out of the straight and kept their positions right round the back, followed by Polynesian and War Maid. At the top of _ the straight the field closed up and in a good race to the post Hector Gray brought Lady Beaufort along with a rattle, and passing the leaders quickly went on and won by a length from Polynesian, who beat Hastie over the last few yards for second place, Arihia _ close up fourth. It was raining hard when this race was run, for which Paremata, Aratiaha and Te Manuiri were scratched. The starter soon let them go, and they all negotiated the first fcnce safely, the order after landing being Arlington, Union Jack, Pawerewere. The same order prevailed until the entrance to the straight the first round, where Pawerewere ran through. At the next fence he made a bad jump, nearly came down and dropped right back. Arlington also dropped back here, leaving Union Jack • and Coalition to take up the running, Gaekwar some distance further back third. The two leaders raced at the last fence together, Coalition landing over first, going on to win by about four lengths from Union Jack, Gaekwar six lengths away third, Fashion Plate a long way back fourth. The course was very heavy when this race was run. Menelaus.! was withdrawn in favour of Mascot, Master Moutoa, in '* favour, of Master, Strowan and Alteration and Midnight Star wore also withdrawn, leaving nine runners. The ■' field moved off in line, Black Ada and Rose Pink being the first to show: out, and going out of the straight ' the former was a couple of lengths in front of Rose. Pink. The field closed up at the 4-furlong. peg, where Black Ada caved in, leaving Rose Pink to carry on. Sleight-of-Hand and Mascot were .lying handy and ran ap to Rose Pink at the bend for home. Rose Pink was first into the straight, followed by Mascot, Sleight-of-Hand and Orleans. In the run to the post Sleight-of-Hand flad too much in hand and won nicely irom Lady Louisa, who had come with a late run, which landed her just in front of Orleans, who was a head in front of Mascot. Time 2.18 3-5. STEWARDS' HACK HANDICAP; 120 sovs; 6 furlongs. 3 Mr P. Turnbull's ch g Bloomine, syrs, 8.3, Bunyan—Jessamine, (A. Reid) .. 1 1 Mr S. Parker's ch g Perrier, 6yrs, 8.9 (H. There was only a one-horse dividend in this race, from which Rylstone, Otaraua, Campaign 'and Royal Reign were withdrawn. Holyhead and Trickery took up the running at the start, the former leading to the half-mile post, where Trickery passed him momentarily. Holyhead assumed the lead a few yards further on, but tho effort was too much for him and he dropped back in favour of Bloomine, who came on full of running, and, stalling off a strong challenge by Perrier, won by a length and a-half, Trickery a length away third, Goldbearing fourth.
