It bad been smouldering for some time. ilien were engaged during tho day diachargiing cargo with a. view to reaching the burning material and an hour alter they stopped work volumes of smoke ssued from the hatch. AY ater was poured into the hold and towards midnight the lire appeared to have abated but the brigade continued its operations with a view to flooding the burning cargo. Four firemen—Penny, Gciinell. Frost and Aiiunnson— and a. watersider named Sims who entered tho hold were overcome by smoke and had to be removed to til hospital. -None arc considered
