« RUSSIANS ABANDON RIGA SERIOUS POSITION ON NORTH FRONT. London, September 3. A wireless Russian official message states : We have abandoned the Riga region owing to the threatening situation. , A later wireless message states that westward of Riga the Russians retired to a li ie in the direction of Uxkull. The' enemv penetrated positions on the J;iegel river and some of the Russian detachments voluntarily left their positions, retiring northwards. A German official message claims that they crossed the Dvina on both sides of Uxkull. Dense columns of Russian troops are hastily retreating north-east from Riga. Burning villages and farms mark the routes of the retreating Russians.

ON THE ITALIAN FRONT. IMPORTANT AUSTRIAN POSITION ISOLATED. An Italian official message runs : We advanced further eastward in Brestovizza valley. Rome, September 3. The Italians are furiously bombarding Mounts San Gabrielle and San Daniele. The former has been completely isolated for the past week and the reply of the batteries is feeble owing to the heavy artillery having been removed to the Ternovo plateau. Austrian prisoners now coming in belong to reserve units. / j CRYPTIC. ■ Washington, September 3. The Italian Embassy has received a cable from Rome stating that.an Allied War Council will be held in Paris to consider the "greatly altered military situation." AIR RAID ON DOVER. London, September 3. British official: A single aeroplane carried out last night's raid. It dropped seven bombs at Dover. One man was killed and four women, and two children injured. IN FRANCE. Sir 'Douglas Haig reports : —We repulsed a third attempt to capture advanced posts southwest of Havrincourt We made successful raids southeast of Monchv and destroyed dugouts and machineguns.
