The sum of fifteen guineas lias been raised for the Crippled Soldiers' Hostel, tram the sale of tickets in the ait union by Mr Patu Wiiwr.n, of Levin. This sum represents the sale of 030 tickets, and proves that a most most energetic effort has been made | on behalf of the fund by 'Mr Watson. Corporal H. L. Hendtfa, of 'Levin, has been discharged from the Expeditionary Forces on account of being medically unfit for active servticq. Corporal Hendra enlisted in. May and
was a: member of the 35th Reinforcemenrts. In a note toi the 'Chronicle Corporal Hendra states thait his heart is seriously strained. He will noit be able to work for at least sits months to come, and perhaps then he will mot be able to go back to his trade. New Zealand's War Loan is progressing fairly well. . A very enjoyable evening; was 6pent by the residents of Gladistone-road oil Friday evening, the 17tli inst., at Mr GimMett's residence, wlien the children of that road gave an entertainment. The performance was a credit to the children and to Mr Dufresne, who trained them from the occasion. During the interval Mr 3>ufresne outlined the origin of the entertainment, and said that although no Charge had been made for admision he would ask them to mart the occasion by giving liberally to the Wounded' Soldiers' Fund. The hat was then passed round and the iund will benefit to the extent of something over £3. Mesdames Ootter, Dufaesne, Gimblett, and Williams provided' refreshments, when, the children showed they were good in that line as well. Sing On Kee was fined 1 £1 and costs (£2 lis) at "Wellington S. M. Court yesterday, for having.,forwarded! a number of oases by rail to Levin,, the declaration on the railway consignment note .stating that the cases' contained fruit. At Levin .the officiate at the staition found one case contained oonfectionery, the freight on whioh was much higher than on fruit.
