Chasing the Wild Deer

"AND FOLLOWING THE ROE." LEVIN SPORTSMEN ON THE RiUAHINE RANGES. "Py korry l ! him to fine diersey vealer!" was the remark of a Levin Maori this week, on noticing two fine carcases c;f venison hanging in ■Messrs Bulliman Brothers' butchers' shop. These two were part of a "bag" of ten shot under permission from the Department of 'Internal Affairs, for benefit of the Red Cross Society,. The game fell to the rifles of Messrs C. Bould and W. G. Vickers, of Levin, and Mr.. Wilson, the Wellington Acclimatisation Society's ranger.

The three sportsmen startled from Paraparaumu early last Saturday, heading for the .bush country at the back of the mountains. "With the exclamation "Saw you first," one of the party, suddenly took cover, and then showed where a herd of ten deer were disporting. Seven of the deer fell in short time, most of them to Mr. Bould's rifle. The problem of getting the beasts oulT to civilisation was a bigger task than the shooting, and it was not until Sunday night that this l was accomplished. The. pushing and shoving of the carcases up hill and down mountain slopes will not be forgotten in a hurry by one member of the party at least, who was not in the ibest of training. Thiring the day a further three heads were got by stalking. Of the ten carcases, five were railed to the Red Cross Shop in Wellington, two were left in Paraparaumu, two were brought to Levin on the rear of Mr. Vickers's motor car, and the tenth one provided meat for the camp of the shooting party. The Levin quota of the venison was sold on Tuesday, at the Red Cross shop, and every joint was disposed of.

Tlie Rerl Cross Society is particularly grateful to Messrs Bould, V'ickers and Wilson for their efforts, and also to Messrs. Bulliman ißros. who generously undertook the skinning, cutting-up and jointing of the meat.
