Messrs Dawson laud l'ringle awkod for permission to orcct a gate across the new road at Arawhata, Beach-rd., Levin. Mt W. S. Park, solicitor to t'liti council advised' that a trial bo given to powers derived under the rating Amendment Act, 1910, for enforcing judgments obtained by local authorities. "This might dissipate the current among natives." said Mr Park's letter) "that they can refuse to pay their rates with impunity." THE MEETIX'G. The Horowhenua. County Council's meeting was attended by Councillors G. A. Monk (chairman), G. X: Stephenson, F. W. Venn, F. W, Ryder. H. Freeman. S, A, Broad-belt, A. Murray, John Kebbell and G. P. Catley. R. M. Lange's application for work to be done on a road at Tokomaruo was oeferred to the councilors for the riding, with power to act. R. Schwass's application for permission to alter a lino of boundary fence on a road at Tokomaru was referred to the councillors for the riding. The councillors for Tokomnrti and 1 the county engineer were authorised to inspect an area of about one rood at. Tokomaru which Mr Boot wishes to cultivate (at a yearly rent) at pleasuse of the council. Mr Sheargold's application to have a culvert put into position at his gate at Boslyn-road was referred to the County Engineer, to attend to at once. 'Messrs Dawson and Pringle's implication for permission to orec-t a gate near Arawhata road was referred to the county engineer, the permission to be "during the pleasure of the council." Tlhe councillors for Tokomaru riding were given power to act in the case of an invalid owner of :i horse found running at la'rgo on the roads, the invalid's son being now in camp at Trentham, and she requiring the use of the horse for purposes of outings. The council decided to take action, as recommended by the county solicitor to recover rates due on certain native lands, for which judgment already has been obtained in Levin S.M. Court. Exemption in respect to road pro-vis-ion was granted to M. (S,iir.rox. Otaki, in respect to a piece of land. "THE -LOXC4 ACRE," Discussion took place concerning the running of stock on the public roads, and opinions were expressed that too much latitude was given Uv the system followed by the council in regnr-.! to prosecution of owners of trespi-s----i'i7 stock. The chairman said he v.as in fivor of leaving discretion to t:i» ranger, unless this were continued, cases of hardship would arise. Councillor Kebbell remarked Ijiot tlu> roads in his district had been freer from trespassing stock since the present ranger took up the work than they used to be. Councillor Murray thought that the ranger (who had done good l work) could effect remedy if he were instructed to bo more drastic in applying the rule of the couneil. On the motion of Councillor Catley, seconded by Councillor ;!?yder. it. was resolived "That the ranger he inetruicgtfed (to t,hkfe more drastic .s in respect to cattle wandering on the roads,"
