CONSCIENCE AND BUTTER.
(To the Editofi. Sir,—l noticed the other day mat a farmer from 'this district ciaiiiu-cl exemi)tion from military service, on the ground that his conscience would not permit him to take up arms to slaughter his fellow man. ude argues, like many of his kidney, Lliat the Bible prohibits the bearing of arms. Well, lie may bo right; it prohibits a great many other things that some professed Christians do in t'iie interests of creed or business. liut, -Mr. Editor, let us have consistency. If it is w ong to take i'j. rms :ig:"ii<t I'll? Hun invaders of Belgium, it is wrong to take up iarms against the strikers of Wellington. There ' 'was" a strike-bearer from this district who went to Wellington aud bore arms and a similar name to that of the conscientious objector who was before the miliary board laiely. It seems to me that some consciences are stirred very deeply w'hen a few pounds of personal butter are held up, but prove sluggish when the hold-up is in far-away Belgium.—l am etc., UNIONIST.
