Ţhe Chronicle LEVIN. THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 1917. THE N.Z. BUDGET.
j H.o New Zortland Financial Statement I delivered last night, was more than ! onnnarilyq interesting by reason ' of i the large issues arising from the need j for effectively carrying on Sew Zea- ! land's part in the war. The dominj ion's greatly increased receipts in. j IS I U3-17 (close on four million pounds ! extra) lire partly counter-balanced by ! an increased expenditure of over one j and a half millions; and in the nature' i of tilings, this outkping is more likely to be increased further than to oe diminished. It is, 'therefore, not to ho wondered at trat the 'Budget proposes the making of highly increased charges on the taxpayer, to meet the (extraordinary expenditures of present . times, when certain faeadls of the war expenditure (are ibeflng charged to revenue instead of lumping a.ll such ! expenditures of the present times, when certain head's of the war expenditures are being charged to revenue, in stead 'of lumping all such expendii- . j tines in with the general cost of the | war. A satisfactory aspect of the I Now Zealand's part in tWe wa:'r is the j eeononmy - resulting from last year's j renture of raising a War Loan in the i -Dominion. The Budget records | highly-pleasing fact, that, in '19K3, overj £11,{100,000 of the [Dominion War | f '"an of £10,000 was raised in Now j Zealand, at a net cost of J per cent., only, which is considerably below the i cost of raising loans on the London | market. The average cost of raising , the last three loans in London prior i to the war was 3* per cent., and the average cost of raising the two loans , in New Zealand during the/war was three-eighth's of one pound per cent. ' | The . Budget as a whole is far too , lengthy! for • reproduction in the coluin us of a short-staffed country newsI ii-ip<ei. and to attempt even a compre- | hensiye summary of it is beyond the | capacity of small newspapers. ■ How- | ever, we have endeavored to convey ni six or eight paragraphs the outj standing items of the Budget pro- : pn.sals. In due course the printer 1 j document will be available' at the . public libraries. Meanwhile, any citj izon of Levin and district wlito is dej Blrous <>f P er «sing the Statement .•>' , greater length than the city news- | papers afford—the complete Statej ment runs to thirty-two closely prinj ted siles of foolscap— may have the | loan of Ihe Chronicle's advance copy, ; for which_we are indebted to tihte forethought of the Hon. the Minister of I Finance. I Two most important things when -.a { get spectacles are: first, to be sure i that your sight has been property tes*j- ed and that you get the right le.ses, i and, second, that the spectacle frame .is correctly fitted. Another important j thing is to know that you can rely on ' repairs properly done if anything goes wrong. If you come to me you may I be sure that everything will ibe right. F. C.
