'•July, ending to-day, has been the fittest month experienced iiu the whole history of Levin. Heavy showers in the early hours of Monday added iiibout half-an-inch to> the total rainfall for the month, and made the 30th consecutive day on which at least one point of »ain fell. On 29 ot the thirty-one days enough rain fell to make "wet days," and the figures <;f, Average for the month sre phenomenal.- Rain again fell early tthis morning, making 31 days of more or loss wet nature.
To the soldiers' Xmiis Pudding .Fund, organized by 'Mrs J. P. Luke, iMr.yoress of Wellington, 325 children of the Levin District High School are contributing one shilling each, which will represent 325 puddings,. each of which will bear a label wth the name and school of the donor.
Private Walter 'Barratt, of Levin, after twelves months of trench life,, in a letter to his mother states that lie'is now at the base camp for medical examination. He writes from the hosipitaj at Polougne, and mentions that lie is able to look across the water and see the shores of England. He left the trenches in a hospital train, which was much superior to the troop train in which he journeyed to the firing line. He sends post cards with views of the cities throuahwhich ho. passed, and of \vhicih h® was able to get some fine views. The whole country a.wav from the front >s most picturesque, the scenery .brfng delightful. Private Barrett met •rprtso A\ bite, Allan Petter and . Easthope, of Levin, and Stanley Saint, of Ohau. They were all well, and it was a time of rejoicing when they met. so far away from home,
The urgent need o£ eid lines Soar the military hospitals at Featherston and Trentham was mentioned by Mrs. J. P. 'Luke, mayoress of Wellington, at the meeting held in Levin last I'riday night. Just before she left Wellington, Mrs. Luko was asked by Surgeon-Major Henderson to mention in the country districts how great was the need for old linen, particularly jtist now: supplies were very short. T hose who have any to (spare—no matter whether it be, white curtains or' the like—may send it to the Red Cross Shop, Levin, where U will be packed, and duly despatched. Anyone who wishes to send direct should addresss the parcel to The P.M.0., Featherston Military Hospital, Featherston. It is, of course, very desirable that all old linen sent in shall have been washed and dried. Another need that was mentioned In Mrs. Luke was that of empty tins, with lids, for holding cake and sue like to be included in the gift parcels. Half-pound tea-tins, cocoa tins, tobacco tins, mustard tins—all come in useful. .Every household can help tn supply the requirements, and if those who can will leave them at the Re: Cross Shop, arrangements will thc be made--for despatch to Wellington. As we go to press to-day a representative of-The Cripple iSoldiers' 'Hostel Art Union is distributing 5s to every person who, on request, produces an art union ticket hearting the words "Wizard Lighting for Country Homes." Many of the people approached failed to comply with the request. As there is a likelihood of th" distribution extending over two or three days the public arc advised to lose no tipio in securing one or these tickets. Apart- from the excitement the cause is a most, deserving one Acomplete list of the "Jjicky receivers" of os will appear in our next issu®.
