COUNTY ENGINEER REPORT

Following ,is the report of the county engineer (Mr Jas. [Malcolm) read at the meeting of the iHorowlienua County Council this month :— To Horo Riding. The metalling of the worst parts of the road is now done and the road is in fair order. The timber for the new top to the upper Xgatiawa bridge is now on tlie ground and I have just been advised that the timber for the superstrucure of the 'bridge on the MangaoneTs Horo road lias left Wellington, and I presume is now at the Te Horo railway station. As soon as I know it is all in sight T will send along the carpenters and get it put in its place. It has been reported to me that two small .bifi'dges on the Mangaotie-«Rei-kioranigi road are in a bad way. Mr Campbell, iwlio is practical, reports that at least £20 will have to be spent on them at on»e to make them safe for traffic. I hope to- have the carpenters at Reikiorangi in about ten days; it may be best to get them to do the work, but I will decide after seeing them. I propose sending the stonecrusher to Waikanae about the end of next week. The worst parts of the road round here will be done by that time, and T think the worst part is the Waikanae end of the rain road. I get more complaints about it than any- other. I have called tenders for the approaches to the overliridge at Major Addington's and they are due to-day. Thero still is a good deal of work to be done on the Waih'oanga road to make it what it should be. I shall have to keep the men there another week or two.

Wirokino .Riding,

Metalling has been the order of the day in this riding for the month and the following roads have got quantities' allowed for tliem and in

most cases a little more—Levin-Fox-tbn.i Leviii-ivoputaroa, Heatherlea East", Tavistock, Fairfield. Roslvn and the main north road. There is no doubt that all the roads included in the original schedule needs metalling as soon as possible, but the roads in the southern end of the county need it more and I thing after the end of next week we will let tliem stand over for a time and do the southern end. 1 have got the bridge work that needed doing in this riding attended to. I sent the grader round the greater part of the .roads in the riding and combed' off the edges. I had to put on one or two extra men to clean the combings out- of the wa-ter-tables before it! began to grow. I will get the main road through the Ihakara reserve done as soon as we get clear of the stone-cruslier. I have had one or two dangerous places on the Kawiu road fenced. When the roller comes I will get the metal rolled. Then the settlers wil'l have little to complain about.
