I 1 "rom France, Private J. GordoniGlassford writes an interesting letter to his parents at Tawhere, Levin. On May 7tli and Bth lift regiment's quarters had been through a lively bombardment. and lie lnid had to turn out of tent several times during tho night and run for shelter. The letter contains one passage of more than ordinary interest; can it possibly be « reference to The Chronicle? "We are, ahvays g'ad to sec 'The Ra.g.{ " he writes; "it has greatly improved under its new title and is now quite a newsy paper." An interesting reference to French formers is made in the letter. "They are very thorough farmers, and get absolutely all there is to bo got out of ■the land. but_ are terribly slow: we could do twice as much in half tlvc time. They plough, plough, plough year after year; it all seems to be iii the .soiling- system. I've asked one
or Iwc French people their opinion of milking mil chines, and they say 'Par boil, LMonsioitr' l(no good. niister)t'"
The writer •makes appreciative reference to the work of his mother and sixftor and all othcn' workers at the patriotic functions; "there isn't one of us," he says, "who isn't proud of our dear people in iXbw Zealand for all they are doing for us." A "naming competition" is advertised to-day by the new picture show proprietary, Town Hall, Levin. A special donation by the way of 2000 printed envelopes and sheets of writing paper, has made to the Horowhenua Patriotic Association Ibv Mr R;. G. ALacLean, of P>araparumu. We understand that this is the second contribution that lias 'been made by i\lc Mac-Lean, and has enabled the Association to commence operations under very little expense. "Whilst the management committee expect to have to> pay away money for office necessaries it is very plesing to have gifts of this, kind, thus conserving all the funds possible for the soldiers.
Through the courtesy of Mr. M. ■Sciiel. the proprietor of the new Picture theatre which is to be opened in Levin next moiitli, a novel turn .has been promised for the program of the Patriotic Concert and send-off to lie given in the Century Hal! to-morrow night (Friday). Mr. Hcott, the manager of the tlieatre. has consented to provide a portion of the evening's enterta'nm'ent with an exhibition on the lines of Hugard's Conjuring Entertanment. Scott will first of all provide some sleight-of-liand trickSj and will then follow tliem up with some which are not. so simple His work is described as neat and running fire of quaint Yankee humor, which keep the audience on the laugh throughout the exhibition. The time at his disposal will not allow llr Scott to give 'many of the items which have created a reputation for h'ini throughout New Zealand, particularly the human target act. which lie hopes to present to Levin audiences at a later date.
