The Chronicle LEVIN TUESDAY, JULY 3, 1917. LOCAL & GENERAL
The Chronicle is ill receipt of ail interesting and cheery letter from a formed Levinite who is now at the front in Belgium : Qua rtcriiiaster-Sgt R. A. Sloan. He writes:-—"I am pleased to know tliat Levin is still going ahead and I only wish that I was back in it again at the present time. The district, has done very well in recruiting, as The Chronicle list shows, and if every area had only done as well as 'Levin there would have been 110 need for conscription.
. . . We have been having ia very lively time of it during the last day or two (second week in May). 'Fritz has been very much awake. He shelled us out of our billets and we had to 'get' for our lives. Some lof tihei fellows just got away in their shirts. As soon as the bombardment started the sergeant-major and I got out of bed and put on our pants and socks in case any stuff came our way, and we had just got Txick into bed when •lo and behold a great eight-inch shell landed just about fifteen yards away from our 'bivvie'—and we waited for nothing more but went off at a gallop for all we were worth. We got hehind a stack of sandbags and stayed there for five hours until it was all over. iHo got several of our chaps, and amtang them was 'Malcolm Hume, who used to be in (Levin, and was working for Arnold the butcher. He was in the transport, and when Fritz opened up Hume ran to the stables and secured his horses and went into a paddock with them for safety, but in. shell landed just beside them and Idled both his horses and himself. 1 had jusl been having a yarn to him about an hour before the stunt, and he told me he would like to get a 'Blighty' and 'be out of this for a
while. A fellow is much safer in the trenches, during a bombardment, for lie lias a 'bivvio' to got into, but when ho is in the rear he lias no shelter at all. Orders are always posted up that if a bombardment t'p.kes j >];>«> men are to scatter to the Jields, but it happened that those men who went, to the fields this time were the men who got it. Our casualties amongst horses mules and men' were very heavy. lam hoping that everything will bo quiet to-night, as I have had 110 -sleep for forty-eight hours. The ihut I am in is not shell-proof by any means. The walls and ceiling are made of canvas, and would not stop a hard-boiled egg from coming through, far less a shell. I have not seen any Tjevinites for some time now, as they are all scattered over the place. The weather has been lovely during the .last fortnight, but it is raining a bit this morning. The Kia Oro Assembly will hold their usual fortnightly lonsr-nigflit dance 011 /Friday, July (sth, in the T)ruids Hall. Two most important things when;,;.a get spectncles are: first, to be sure that vour iriglit has been properly tested and that you get the right le .ses, and, second, that the (spectacle frame is correctly fitted. Another important thing is to know that you can rely on repairs prsperly done if anything goes wrong. If you come to me you may be sure that everything will be right. F. C. Remington, Levin.—Advt.
After a residence of very many years in Manakau Mr aiicl Mrs J. Hui'ley and family are about to leave the dis trict. They have been identified with the .life of the district throughout tlieir long residence, and their departure will be regretted by _all the residents. A "send-off" will be given to Mr and Mrs Hurley and family in the Public Hall, Manakau, on Friday evening next. As already intimated The Olironicle the plot of ground to be added to the public gardens in Cambridge-street is to be planted in potatoes this season and the returns from the crop will bo devoted to Patriotic Funds. The society is assisting tlie ibcrough council in the work of supplying the seed required and the 'hedge plants wanted for the new area. To replenish the society's exchequer, a popular concert is to be given in the Century Hall next Monday evening, when a very attractive program will be presented, and it is hoped that so worthy an object will be liberally supported by the public of Levin aiid neighbourhood. The organizers of the last concent and "send-off' to men going into camp have very kindly undertaken to provide a program for the concert to be given in the Century Hall on Monday evening next the 9tli July, under the auspices of the Levin and District Beautifying Society. The forty performers who so successfully played ilieir part in the choruses, tableaux, etc., will again appear and by special request "will repeat part of the program then staged. [N'ew choruses, li.;wever, will be added, now soloists will contribute songs, and other items will be .given to complete what promises tc be an attractive program. The matter of putting down golf links on the public recreation ground near the lake (Levin) is being kept in sight by Levin Domain Board. The mayor last night reported' to the board that tlio present lessee had resolved to take off the reserve the crop that he had been authorisd to take; therefore the links could not be put down at present, but his worship thought it might be well to bring the golf club's sheds, rollers, fences, etc., to tho reserve in readiness for the time when the links could be put down. The board resolved that the Heatherlea Golf Olub be written to, enquiring if its offer still was open; and, if so, that the club's assets bo removed to the dollanting of suitable trees and shrubs at Waiopehu .Scenic Reserve (Levin! is being discussed by the Scenic Reserve Board, and at a meeting held last night it was resolved that an official visit be paid to the reserve on tin first Wednesday that Mr J. ißrowr (manager of the Central Development Farm) can make it convenient to at tend. A valuable report on tlie mat ter of suitable trees for planting or this reserve was read at last niglit'i meeting of the board. It was written by Mr Brown in response to a request made by the board some little while back.
Special attention is drawn to the pi of the sacred concert to be given in ;Levin Presbyterian Cliureli to-morrow ("Wednesday) evening. A splendid array of ta.lent is coming down from Shannon to assist in this event; thev will provide duets, solos, and a laughing chorus; in addition to this, the male choir will render quartettes, and the Levin choir will sinjg anthems with tlieir usual artistic finish. The orchestra will dispense sweet mnsie, and some of our old and well-tried friends will he heard in song and story. This is undoubtedly a- treat that should not he missed: special preparations for this function have been in hand for some time, and the production sliotild ; be worthy of a large attendance; there is no charge" for admission; the church friends are trusting wlhollyi to the generosity of the puiblic, and will take np a collection to defray the cost of certain necesisary alterations and >ijnpmv ; eTn-ent|s to be made in the building. We would urge all who intend coming to the concert to be in their p'aces early so as to secure a seat, a bumper- houso being expected. The first item will start at 7.45 p.m. prompt. The Russian Provisional Government has decided to abolish the death penalty. The member ifor 'N'apier (Mr. J. V. Brown) has given notice that in the House of Representatives this week lie will ask the Defence Minister ".Whether he is prepared, in view of the fuller knowledge® of tho disastrous consequences to our soldiers that followed upon tlho traitorous desertion of Private Xymott, to publicly withdraw his former statement that iNym-ot-t was an honorable prisoner of war? Also, whether he will cause the traitor Uvymott to be forthwith gazetted as a deserter." Questioned by a Post reporter concerning the case of P. C. Webb, a member of the 'Xtew Zealand Parliament who is now imprisoned for an offence of sedition, the Minister for Justice said that no remissions were granted in eases wherein sentences of throe months' imprisonment were inflicted. Mr. Webb's term of imprisonment therefore would extend to the 31st July.
