* One hundred thousand dozen liens' eggs wore landed in "Wellington from California last week. Advices received in Levin state that the eggs were sold with a guarantee as to freshness, any not proving so being replaced or purchase money refunded. They sold at -s 3d pjr dozen .and met a ready market. The supply now is exhausted', and a rise of Id or 2d a dozen in the price of "guaranteed fresh" is likely to take place next week. Mrs A. Saunders, of Shannon, has received word that her brother, P:riviate Norman "Wallace, has been killed in action in France. He left with the 16th E enforcements. He was wellknown in the Hawera district where ho has lived' all Ihis life. The coroner (Mr W. 0. Nation) held the adjourned inquest on the remains of a man found on the Mils at Manak»u in February last, a.t the Otaki Courthouse last Thursday). (He went through the correspondence which had passed since dllie inquest held on 10th March, and which showed that the police had made exhaustive inquiries to find out whether the remains were those of Peter Smith, storekeeper, of Manakau. These inquiries have given no clue to the identity of the remains, and the coroner returned a verdict that the remains were those of some pea-son unknown.—Otaki Mail.
New Zealand casualties in the fighting aibout the time of the Messines attack in 'Franco number over 2000 up to June 9tli. In the casualty list issued at Wellington on Thursday thero were 35 names of men killed' and 11 died of wounds; eight officers wounded and 1092 men wounded. Amongst the wounded men are: iSergt R.. E. Lucas, Levin ; Private Sciascia, Koputaroa ; Private O. Va'iighan, Shannon; LanceCorporal Walton, iManakau; Sergt. Jacob, Levin; Private W. Goffin, Levin. The following workers were present at the Women's 'Red Cross Guild last Friday: Mesdames Davison, Gibson, J. Prouse, Kirkcaldie, Richter, Porteoiifs, Keedwell, Thompson, Vickers, Phillips, Kirk, Fulton, Vincent, Edwards. The workers wish to thank Mrs Parsons for the scones she so kindly sent for afternoon tea. Miss Whitaker awl Miss Gordon Glassford were in charge of tlhe Red Gross shop on Saturday. A black orpington cockerel exhibited by Mr Bower, of Laviu, at Palmerston Show . this week gained the ten guiuea cup awarded for the best utility bird in the show. There were' six entrants. Mr Bower also gained first prize and special for white leghorn cock, for best English white leghorn cockerel second and third, first for block orpington cock, v.h.c. for white rock lien.
