The gift stock auction sale held in Alio livestock auctioneers' partis at Levin yesterday, realised £346 for tlio County Patriotic Fund. The Chronicle lis informed that there are iines yet to be sold; they were held over owing to a lengthy list. Due acknowledgment to the. donors of gilts will be made as soon as all the lists are returned to the secretary. The local representative of the Jsew Zeal and' farmers' Distributing Vom-pa-ny, 'Ltd. (Mr. C. W. Jennings), is about to leave Levin. He is being transferred to the Wairanapa, where lie will act as the company's local representatives. In future the Levin agency will be worked in conjunction with the Fedlding business, untat lately conducted as Atkinson's, Limited. Mr. Jennings's departure from Levin will be regretted by a wide i circle of friends. His genial manner lias assisted very materally in developing the company's 'business in these parts. Mr, L. "W Fletcher, of Levin, has just received advice from Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence, that Mr. Fletcher's brother, Sergeant F. W. Fletcher- (military medal) has ibeen slightly jarred, and is now in Brockenhurst Hospital, England. The people of Lenin are to be congratulated on the great reception given to the Bev: 'It-., C. Nicholson and' Daniel Bula, missionary envoys. The Century Hall was well filled to meet these visitors from the far-off Solomon and not on© person could have left the hall disappointed after listening to the story of the work carried on and the acliievments made. [Daniel, the native convert, expressed himself in a truly sympathetic manner, and said he felt how glad we as white folk must be that white and black could meet together in friendliness and love. Before he was converted he did not know what friendliness" and love were; he never attended' a meeting except to make arrangements for billing a man. Mr. [Nicholson greatly interested his hearers. Be is a clear and fluent speaker, and tells the story of his work, the drawbacks, and of the nature of the islanders with vivid clearness. Very few meetings have been held in the Century lHall where so much interest has been displayed. The work of the Methodist Missionary cause greatly benefits "by the rally. £18 <3s 6d was colleced in the hall and £28 10s was promised, in addition to which £1 Os 6d was donated to defray expenses of .the meeting. Further, since the gathering on Friday night other sums have been sent in, and a point has been reached where it would not take a great effort to total £100. The rally has been good ill eve.rv way.
A ballot for £300 free of interest was drawn by Levin Terminating Building Society last Monday evening. The lucky tnarb'l© represented (Miji O. Shaw, of Weraroa road, who accordingly receives the use of £300 free of interest. A further sum of £300 free of interest was lot by tender, the successful tenderer being Mr F. (E. Parker. Over one thousand casualties to the iXcw Zealand forces are published today. A total of 238 were fatal. They ocoured during Sir Douglas Ka'ig's advance on Me.ssine®. Tho list of men dead includos the name of Private Patching, Otaki. The wounded men include TroopnSorgt. Fletcher, Levin-; J. 13. Southwood, Lovin; Corporal R. J. MdDermott.
