COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT

The Countu' Engineer (Mr J. Malcolm) reported as folio us to the last meeting of the Horowhemia County Council, .held last (Saturday: Te Horo Riding. Little is being done m this riding but the usual maintenance. The metalling of tiie W'aikanae Beach load is now being done. It has been very well done—much better than 1 intended when flraming the estimates. However, it should last a long time. As there is no motal to be got in the river near the main road, we will have to get it from the approach cutting on the north side of the river, and as it is very rough I think it will be well to include it in the maintenance metal contract and get it crushed. I enclose you a tender that I have from Mr W. Winter for crushing and delivering all the metal that we will require in any part of the riding. I think it is reasonable. 1 propose to get the Waihoanga road fixed up at once. There is not a great deal needs doing. Several of the Waio>hanga settlers have been to me about a bridge on the abandoned road between Mr Booth's woolshed and the Waihoanga school. All the children from the riding boundary up attend this school, and there is a bridge on the road in a very bad way; in fact, very dangerous; and they ask us to replace it with something safe. I have examined it, and find it all they say. I would suggest that we give them a six-feet footbridge sufficiently strong to allow stock to cross. It would not be possible to prevent tlicm crossing without a gate on both ends. I think it will be better to give them the extra strength than bother with the gates. I estimate the cost at £15. I will inspect the Pahiko drain deviation early next week. I understand it is finished, but I hare not had time to see it up to now. I inspected Dr Huthwaite's road on the 6tli inst., and found it in very fair order. I now recommend that the plan be sealed. lam sending him a certificate to enable him to get the plan passed.

Otaki Riding. Very little is doing in this riding but the usual maintenance. We are waiting for .someone to come along and do the metalling. I have also got a tender from AVinter and Co. for this riding (it is good deal less than wo paid last year) for the supply of all that is needed in this riding. I think it is very reasonable. I could not find time to peg out the pipe line at .North Mianakou, but the settlers have plenty of water nt present. I will arrange to get the tenders in by next meeting for the construction. I think it will be good business to acquire the land needed to widen the main road from the end of the Otaki bridge back to where we purchased the land from the late Air T>. .Tndd. Tt is only a small piece and 1 don't think the present owner will be unreasonable. I suggest the councillors for the riding and myself he appointed a committee to try and arrange it. T shall as soon as possible form a piece of the AVaikawa Beach road where most wanted. I have been stuck for horses, but I understand that she has got a team that she is willing to hire. That will get over the difficulty.

Wirokino Riding. The roads in this riding have stood tlie wear this season better than usual. I think the dry summer has had something to do with. The laying of in the northern end of this riding is now in hand. We managed to arrange a reasonable contract with Winter and Close for it. and T expect we will manage to arrange the other end as they now have got the teams. T think they will linve ten or eleven on Monday next. That is nearly all the wide tyres in the county.
