A total of 8545 names is to be drawn for the shortage in the 32nd' Reinforcements to be mobilised two months hence, the actual short- ■ age being 1898, which is the largest to Ml'ate. Under the voluntary system every district has a shortage, as voluntary .recruits numbered only 379 for the whole dominion. Three Canterbury districts obtained 17 recruits; the West Coast none. There thus remain in the Ist Division only sufficient men for another three ballots with a few thousand over. This will result in the Ist [Division being exhausted by ballot in twelve wedks. and' then must come re-examinatior of men placed for home service; "alsc ncjvision. of ■exemptions 'before th( second division is drawn on.
