A special meeting of the Ohau school committee was held on Wednesday last. There were present: Messrs Gluokin (ohair), Harkness, Bauson, Walton and Davies. It was resolved to Ihold a social and dance on the night of Friday, 25th inst., as a sendoff to Miss Thomson who has resigned from the school staff. The question of trying to get a conveyance to bring the children from the Beacli-road was discussed, and the committee determined to try and get some suitable person to do this work. Some time was spent in discussing ways and means of improving. the school grounds. A subcommittee is to consult with the headmaster for the purpose of initiating dome icomprehensfc© scheme of [improvement.
Any person found trespassing with dog or gun on any of the proreitms of Mr. M. 'H. E. 'Gorringe will be prosecuted. An advertisement in today's Chronicle gives details of situation, letc.
Mr. H. G. Outfield, who for the past 7i years lias been cashier at the Levin branch of the Bank of Australasia, is about to leiave Levin, on promotion. He is being transferred to Taumarunui, where he should speedily fill as popular a niche in the local circles as always he has done in Levin. He has .been connected with many social activities in- this town, and as a, sportsman he has been active in tennis and hockey and golf, and he will leave behind him numerous friends in all these pursuits and pastimes. Mr. C. J. A. Turner, of the Wellington Branch of the Bank of Australasia, will succeed Mr. Outfield in 'Levin. Goods have teen dispatched from Levin to the Red Cross Depot at Wellington, this week,* as follows: — 29 flannel body-belts, 8 suits pyjamas, 4 flannel undershirts, 270 swabs, 30 treasure bags, 10 flannel waistcoats, 10 limb pillows, 2 balaclavas. The committee would be glad of any used wrapping-ipaper, preferably brown on account of its strength.
The following workers were present at the Women! Red Cross Guild at Levin last week :—Mesdames Porter, Thomson, Kirk, Keedwell, -Edwards. Goldsmith, J. Prouse, Pink, Fulton, j Mrs .Plaster- looked after the afternoon tea. Mrs. Tully and Mrs. Cork were in charge of the shop last Saturday. The takings totalled £7 lis sd. This sum goes to the Cardigan jacket fund. Tb-day is the last shop day for that fund. The G.F.S. is holding a gale in aid of the Melanesian mission next Wednesday in the Anglican Sunday School. Details are set out by advertisement on page 3. By special request Mr Aitken will repeat that amusing performance "live Spaniard that Blighted My Life" at the patriotic concert in the Century Hall next Friday night. Lately Mr. Field, M.P., lias been urging the -Government to expedite purchase of lands suitable for closer settlement in the Levin district. Last week he wrote the Acting-Minister for Lands regarding the McDonald Estate lands, and under late of 15th instant he received the following answleir from the department:—"l) am directed by the Hon. the Acting-Min-ister of Lands to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of lltli instant and 24th March mdtli reference to -this J. R. MdDonald Estate at Levin. In reply, your letters will_ be laid before the Chairman on his return from the North about the end of the w'cisk."
