-• ' ' [per press association.] A SEINBATICLVAiIL AFFAIR. 'Hamilton, This [Day. A sensational 'affair occurred at Hamilton, in Cambridge road yesterday, when a taxi-driver. Jidward Henry Peebles, was assaulted by a man named Itdbiu Jasper Crage, an escapee from i'aikiria prison, near Te Awamutu. He engaged Peebles to drive him to Hamilton, and when about four and a half miles along the read Crage said "lEase '.her up!" and as the car was stopping Peebles felt a string go round • his neck. The string was drawn tight and Peebles became unconscious. Next thing he .knew he was struggling with Crage on the side of tihe car. .Both fell on to the road, .Crage biting at Peebles' .hands during the struggle. . Other cars came up and iGrage. was guarded until 'the police arrived. Peebles' liands iwpre badly lacerated, and one nail torn off. Crage was brought before the Court this morning, charged with assault and being an escapee from prison. (Detective Sergeant Cooney said accused was serving a sentence of ten years for attempted murder at Auckland. He escaped from "VVaikirie prison on 18th May last. Further charges are pending.
