ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the county engineer (Mr Jas. Malcolm) at to-day's meeting of the Horcy wlienua County Oounci'l: — Te Hojo (Riding. The metalling of tilne Wiaikamae Beach Road will be finished in a day or two. It will require a little more than 1 provided for, hut we will luave to save it on something else. I have sent the grader to Waikanae, and will, if the weather is suitable, get it at work on Monday morning. I have arranged fcr horses for Waikanne and 'IV, Horo. The decking of the- upper Xgatiawa bridge and the new superstructure for the bridge over the. Man"\aone stream on the Te Horo end. I

propose to get this done during the month if I "call get carpenters. There are two. small bridges in the Wirokino riding, and between them I could keep two of them going for a few weeks. The fencing posts are all used up that we had in stock in the Otaki Gorge, and the wonst places are not all protected; I shall try to get another hun. ' c«red pests when I go up next week. I inspected the Pahiko drains m • com- . pany with Councillor Oatley cn Wednesduy last and we found tliem in fairly good order; the deviation drain Mint we sanctioned is nqt yet completed. I regret to say that the county road fi\:m Gillies' woolshod t.i Brown's mill is in a bad way. I shall "try to - get it improved at once. The. fencing of-the gravel pit has been done at last. Otaki Riding. ; , The fencing of the main .road near the Otaki bridge will be put in handnext week. lam promised the material in a day or two. I propose to call • tenders for metalling the old ' ■Cemetery Road at Otaki-in a* day or two. The tenders will be dealt with

by the councillors for the riding. I think it probable some of the 'local men will teiid r for it a*; it is only a small job. The Wai'kawa. beach iroad out near Mrs Drake's is getting very rough, being nearly impassable in: places. I shall, if possible, get levels, taken of. the womt sandhill and have tenders in at next meeting for lowerlug it. I think it probable the natives will tender for it. The main road throughout is not in bad order; the surtaceman on the southern end is nursing it very well, but he will' not bo able to keep it good very long without out metal. IV a crusher is got wo will be able to get the greater part of the metal required for the | Wmitohu Valley mad from the st>ie"u n&av Blair's ford at the end of +.he roncK 1- "hove oroynes put in where the Manakau ti-rmm is thrctemng the South Maniiiirau road. I thin'k if we get email

floods' before a big one comes the work done will effect what we-want. If not the whole"'may go as it is a very difli- j cult place to deal with as the rojvd and | the river are nearly on the same lOvel. ; Wirokino Riding.. I Little is doing in this riding. 'ihe metaKing of the Tarairua find Kawiu roads is just finished. I have called tenders for the greater part of the maigiteniance tmetal required jin tihis riding and for the metalling cf the KoputaroarFoxton road. It tnusfc work in with the short hauling or it never will, be done. The timber is landed for the Wallace road bridge, and for the superstructure-of the bridge rn the lower-Kuku red. As soon as it is carted I will look for carpenters. The contractors for deepening the Kopntnroa stream nre still able to do a Certain mvonut of work, but I am nfr-irl that if rnr/e nin comes they will be Irvcked off for th* • season. Tnlc-mnii Rid'n" W" n'-o sti'l ah!- to k°"p the r~n?V in t l- <* r : pns®fl.bl?, but wo bog n to f "«1 t*"» "-rnt of mefenl ,-in many plate-. T wi' 1 " f'o with as litfcV- a«. <wsihL f r n Mron at least, as I wrnt it crushed. Another thing there are 110 ccmtrictnra unless they go from Levin. I think 'I will be able to arrange ■with the Fettlers to open up the track in tho Tokoijiaru Valley. I have had several letters from tliem on the matter. I will go in one day next week .and imet. them. Messrs Liggins and Co. pro p-opared to find the money •for r~rtaT'fns the piVco of road frnm the main road to the railway through Mr Wilton's property, anrl they are very nnx : ous to get the work put in hnnd at- once. whnt am I to do ms i there is no me to do it. I might try ' calling tenders in Palmerston, but I -am afraid* the j r.ib is too small.. T propose to Fend the grader up to Tokomam when it returns from the south, as it is much needed in many places. * _ ■ . I
