The Defender
A COMMENDABLE MAGAZINE
"The Defender"—edited by Mr Leo j Fanning, the well-known Wellington journalist— made its first appearaiice last week. It is a published to enable the public to have a clear view of the war work within .New Zealand and overseas." The journal deserves success: it is full of interesting a>rtitiles, brightly written 'and informative; and its price of threepence per week (3Jd posted) is within the means of all. It consists of twentynfour quarto pages. We quote from it a characteristic article: — WIHO WI'LiL LEAD SPADES? . "An Unlicensed Philosopher's Advice." (Dig, brothers, dig. Sow, sisters, sow. A spade can do more good for the country than a golf club can in these days. Who will lead spades? Who will euchre the Knave of Base, Sloth and By-and-by? Who will guide Mr and Mrs Wiggs to the patch of ground) that lies waste in and out of cities and towns? Emulate the soldiers—dig in. If you cannot push a bayonet, you may be able to push a spade. Part of the cost of jiving is the cost of waste. Who failed to use the ground at the back? There would be more food if there was more groupd tilled. . There is plenty of ground)—and plenty of 'strength—going to waste. Dig, .brothers, dig, Sow, sisters, sow.
